Review articles of Hyaluronic acid effects on diabetic foot

Effectiveness of hyaluronic acid for treating diabetic foot: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Article specifications

This review article was published in 2014 in Dermatologic Therapy journal (IF 2014:2.34) by Taiwan specialists. This meta-analysis was designed to evaluate if HA increased the complete healing rate of diabetic foot compared with controls. They searched Medline, Cochrane, EMBASE, Google Scholar (until January 31, 2014) databases for prospective randomized controlled trials that assessed the effectiveness of HA in treating foot ulcers resulting from diabetes. The primary outcome of the meta-analysis was the complete healing rate at 12 weeks. Potential studies were evaluated for inclusion by two independent reviewers. If there was disagreement between the two reviewers, a third reviewer resolved the issue. Our database search initially included 66 potential relevant studies, of which we identified 16 studies that were eligible for full-text articles assessment. The systematic review included 378 patients and 328 patients in the quantitative meta-analysis.

Results

This meta-analysis strengthens the finding that HA is beneficial in treating diabetes wound ulcers by increasing the rate of wound healing. It also suggests HA is beneficial, independent of the form in which the compound is applied to the wound. These findings support the use of HA in treating these ulcers. Overall, there were few adverse associated with HA across the studies.
