Compare the efficacy of trehalose eye drops with that of the commercially available eye drops containing hyaluronan or cellulose now used in the treatment of moderate-to-severe dry eye syndrome
Trehalose versus hyaluronan or cellulose in eye drops for the treatment of dry eye.
Article specification
This randomized, double-masked, 4-week crossover, controlled clinical trial was published in 2004 in Journal Jpn J Ophthalmol. (IF2004: 0.86) by Japanese ophthalmologists. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of trehalose eye drops with that of the commercially available eye drops containing hyaluronan or cellulose now used in the treatment of moderate-to-severe dry eye syndrome. 36 patients with moderate-to-severe dry eye syndrome were divided into two groups: the hyaluronan (Hyalein)-comparison group (18 patients) and the hydroxyethylcellulose (Mytear)-comparison group (18 patients).
Result
Trehalose solution was a better treatment for moderate-to-severe dry eye syndrome in comparison with two commercially available eye drops containing hyaluronan or hydroxyethylcellulose.
