Comparing Efficacy of Conventional and New Single Larger Dose of Intra-Articular Viscosupplementation In Management of Knee Osteoarthritis

Randomized controlled trial comparing efficacy of conventional and new single larger dose of intra-articular viscosupplementation in management of knee osteoarthritis

Article specifications

This randomized controlled trial was published in 2017 in journal of orthopedic surgery (IF2015: 1.215) By Malaysian orthopedics.  In this clinical study the possibility of using single injection of  an intermediate MW (range 800 k–1500 kDa) hyaluronic acid, GO-ON® presented in 2.5 ml prefilled syringe at a concentration of 10 mg/ml to increase patient convenience while maintaining the therapeutic efficacy was evaluated. This study included 127 patients with osteoarthritis in one or both knee included, 33 males and 94 females with mean age of 59.1 years. They divided in 2 groups: group 1 received single 5 ml GO-ON injection group 2: received 2.5 ml GO-ON three injections weekly for 3 weeks. Baseline Western Ontario McMaster University Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) scores were evaluated and recorded. All subjects were re-evaluated at 3 months and the WOMAC score recorded again as primary end points.

Results

The results at 3 months revealed single intra-articular GO-ON (5 ml) injections to be as effective as the standard three GO-ON injections (2.5 ml given as weekly doses for three weeks). Both groups of patients recorded 33% improvement in WOMAC score at 3 months which was statistically significant. Also regime of single larger dose is convenient due to fewer injections and related events of localized adverse effects and hence likely to be generally more acceptable compared to triple injections.
