Glucosamine, Chondroitin Sulfate, and the Two in Combination for Painful Knee Osteoarthritis

Article specifications

This clinical trial was published in 2006 in journal of the New England journal of medicine (IF 2016: 72.406) by American orthopedics. In this article the efficacy and safety of Glucosamine/chondroitin in treatment of knee osteoarthritis were evaluated. 1583 patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (mean age=59 and 46% was women) divided in 5 group:1- received 500 mg of glucosamine 3 times daily, 2- 400 mg of chondroitin sulfate 3 times daily,3- both glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate3 times daily . 4- 200 mg of celecoxib daily, and 5- received placebo for 24 weeks. Patients were evaluated at baseline and 4, 8, 16, and 24 weeks after randomization.

Results

The results of the study showed that Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate alone or in combination did not reduce pain effectively in the overall group of patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Combination of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate may be effective in the subgroup of patients with moderate-to-severe knee pain.
