Hyaluronic acid: the scientific and clinical Evidence

This review article was published in 2007 in Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery (IF 2015: 1.45) by British and Australian specialists. This study presents an overview, including the scientific evidence for its use in wound healing and, briefly, in other fields. It used the experience of this technology with searches in the English language literature for the purpose of a systematic review. It summarizes the evidence for and against hyaluronic acid and provide a resume´ of the current technologies available in fields such as skin regeneration and wound healing, in addition to cosmetic surgery.

 

Results

This review set out to provide an in-depth summary of the history and development of hyaluronic acid in a number of fields. It has described how basic science has allowed the scientific community to appreciate the underlying biology and physiology of HA preparations, in particular the way in which it modulates the tissue response to injury. It has attempted to provide a sound scientific basis for the use in clinical practice of materials synthesized from HA and have restricted this review to those areas in which it is achieving clinical presence.
