Hyaluronic Acid: A Boon in Periodontal Therapy

This Review article trial was published in 2013 in North American Journal of Medical Sciences (IF 2013:1.2) by Indian dentists. The aim of this review, article is to discuss various physiochemical, biochemical, and pharmaco‑therapeutic uses of HA, especially in relation to treatment of periodontal disease. The Pubmed/Medline database was searched for keywords “HA and periodontal disease,” which resulted in 89 articles and “HA and gingivitis” revealed 22 articles. Only highly relevant articles from electronic and manual search in English literature were selected for the present review article.
Results
In the field of dentistry, hyaluronic acid has shown anti‑inflammatory and anti‑bacterial effects in the treatment of periodontal diseases. Due to its tissue healing properties, it could be used as an adjunct to mechanical therapy in the treatment of periodontitis. Further studies are required to determine the clinical efficacy of hyaluronic acid in healing of periodontal lesion.
