This study was published in 2013 in Laryngoscope the American Laryngological, Rhinological and Otological journal (IF 2016:2.471) by Spanish otologists. The aim of the present study was to determine the efficacy, safety, and potential complications of hyaluronic acid gel in the management of Lagophthalmos. 26 patients with paralytic Lagophthalmos had an injection of hyaluronic acid (Restylane®) in their eyelids. The pretreatment, post treatment, and residual Lagophthalmos were measured by photographing the eye face-on, with a surgical ruler leaning against the external canthus.

Results

In conclusion this study showed that injection of hyaluronic acid can be effective and safe in patients with nonsevere Lagophthalmos and injections can be repeated until facial palsy resolves completely.
