Cross-Linked Hyaluronan Used as Augmentation Substance for Treatment of Glottal Insufficiency: Safety Aspects and Vocal Fold Function
Cross-Linked Hyaluronan Used as Augmentation Substance for Treatment of Glottal Insufficiency: Safety Aspects and Vocal Fold Function. A prospective, randomized trial.
Article specifications
This clinical study was published in 2002 in journal of The Laryngoscope (IF2016: 2.471) by Swedish Otolaryngologists. The aim of the study was to examine safety aspects and vocal fold function after vocal fold augmentation with a cross-linked hyaluronan as compared with bovine collagen. This study included 83 patients with glottal insufficiency they treated with injection augmentation with hylan B gel (47 patients) or collagen (23patients) injections into one vocal fold and 13 patients with glottal insufficiency caused by scar defects or paresis resulting from malignant disease were included in a nonrandomized group and were treated only with hylan B gel. Evaluations were made from patients’ subjective ratings (visual analogue scales), digitized video stroboscopic measurements, phonograms, maximum phonation time, and phonation quotients.
Results
The results of the study showed that both hylan B gel and collagen could be safely used for injection treatment of GI. The analysis of vocal fold vibrations and efficacy showed significantly more favorable results for injections with the hylan B gel as compared with bovine collagen. There was less resorption for the hylan B gel as compared with the collagen. The patients with vocal fold atrophy showed significant improvement from the injection treatment.
