Sodium hyaluronate in trabeculectomy: effect on early complications A Prospective, Randomized, Clinical study

Article specifications

This clinical trial was published in 2006 in Journal of Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology (IF 2016:1.42) by Turkish ophthalmology. In this article the effect of sodium hyaluronate on the early complications of trabeculectomy was evaluated. In this study 51 patients with glaucoma were divided into 2 groups randomly. In 24 eyes sodium hyaluronate was injected into the anterior chamber after suturing the scleral flap. In the remaining 27 eyes (control group) only balanced salt solution was injected. Visual acuities, IOP and complications like hypotony, shallow anterior chamber, choroidal detachment and bleeding were evaluated first day, first week and first month postoperatively.

Results

The evidence of this clinical trial showed that Sodium hyaluronate-assisted trabeculectomy decreased the incidence of early postoperative complications like anterior chamber shallowing, choroidal detachment and hypotony, but it did not have any effect on hyphema or its clearance.
